If your work-life balance is awry - take action

Are you going to make the most of this bank holiday weekend? You might as well; by the time the next one rolls around summer will be virtually over with back-to-school looming large on the horizon.

I accept that some readers of this article may well be in business sectors which leave no option other than to work over the bank holiday. Indeed, some may well see this weekend as being one of the major revenue earners of the year. But if you don’t work in one of these sectors, why would you plan to work indoors while the sun is shining. More importantly, why would you expect your employees to do the same and what does that say about your work-life balance?

Logic says you need a break, a chance to recharge the batteries. But logic often plays little part when the workload overwhelms. So the temptation is there to put in the hours, to do just a bit or just a bit more catch up or get ahead.

But what sort of message does that send out to your employees or colleagues? Are they expected to work as well or can they ‘enjoy’ their time of rest in the sure and certain knowledge that come Tuesday morning you will be dumping a load of extra work on their desks; the fruits of your weekend slog. And why should they suffer because your work-life balance is awry.

I know it’s going to be hard, but this weekend why don’t you just take a break? And if the outstanding workload is so overwhelming and you feel you have to do something then perhaps you need to spend the time in reviewing what you are doing, when you are doing it and why. Instead of slogging take the time to plan, to delegate or to ditch all that reporting work which quite simply isn’t productive. Whatever you decide, don’t make this yet another weekend when you are lost in unproductive toil.  Happy bank holiday.
