Soft skills, strong results

With 97% of employers believing that soft skills are important to their current business success and with those soft skills estimated to add £88 billion to the UK economy there are plenty of reasons why it is time for soft skills to come out of the cold and help UK business to deliver strong results.

Wherever we work in business it is hard not to look at solid facts.  Sales, profits, turnover or even the number of customer plaudits or complaints can dominate our working lives.  Numbers are easy to quantify, they look good on a chart or in a spreadsheet and we can follow the dotted lines upwards and down as they tick away our successes or otherwise.

In fact so much have numbers come to dominate our lives that they have also started to muscle in on our enjoyment of sport.  Where once a match report concentrated on skills and on teamwork; nowadays no self-respecting report would be complete without statistics covering percentage possession, yards gained or shots on goal.

But whilst statistics can show part of the story it is the softer skills such as teamwork and communication which will in the end differentiate the outstanding from the also-ran in business and in sport.  In recognition of this, a group of business leaders have launched a campaign to bring soft skills back into the limelight.  The campaign, which numbers organisations such as the CBI and Learn Direct as well as businesses such as Barclays and McDonalds among its backers, aims “not only to change peoples’ perceptions of soft skills, but also to generate some brilliant new ideas about how to develop them in the workforce so that all employees can benefit from them.”
