Treat employees like automata and they will give nothing back; engage with them and they will be the best ambassadors which your company can have.

You’ve seen the tweets, you’ve watched the videos, you’ve read the articles; but do you really know why so much emphasis today is placed on employee engagement? Is it just some meaningless measurement which governments and industry bodies pounce on as they shake their heads and pronounce ‘must do better’; is it one way in which investors can measure the effectiveness of corporate governance; or is it just the latest management fad?

Well, yes; governments, industry bodies, investors and those who seek to expand the boundaries of what is possible in business are all concerned with employee engagement but it is far from a meaningless statistic. Quite simply, irrespective of the effect on the employees themselves, employee engagement will mean the difference between happy and dissatisfied customers, business success or failure.

When people are aligned with the business strategy, when they are working with purpose to deliver game changing customer experiences then something special happens.

  • Employees feel empowered to create real solutions which drive customer satisfaction
  • Happy customers bring recommendations and repeat business
  • Investors respond to positive publicity and actively seek to back the company
  • Productivity rises, wastage falls, thereby improving profitability
  • Good employees look to stay with the company and talented people want to join

Treat employees like automata and they will give nothing back; engage with them and they will be the best ambassadors which your company can have.
