Take a fresh look at your culture and use springtime to sweep away toxic practices and enhance employee engagement

Sometimes it seems as though life gives with one hand and takes away with another.  We had one such example this week from the Met Office.  The weather forecasters had scarcely finished promising that warmer spring weather was on its way when the Met Office announced that with that warmer weather the risk of hay fever from tree pollen would start to rise.

But hay fever or not, it does look as though spring is on its way, bringing a lift to the step alongside a sudden desire to clean away the stuffiness of winter and begin anew.  Now we are not suggesting that organisations hand out brooms and set employees to cleaning but spring is a good time to sweep some fresh air through the business culture.

When employees naturally have a spring in their step then what better time to make some changes which will help them to keep that happy feeling throughout the rest of the year?  And it needn’t take much.  How about giving praise where praise is due; how about examining if you really need that extra layer of process sign off which adds nothing to the offering apart from time; how about empowering employees to go the extra mile on customer service? In fact, how about opening up lines of communication so that genuine two-way feedback can lead to innovative enhancements?

When spring sets the spirits to rise don’t suppress smiles with controlling processes.  Instead take a fresh look at your culture and use springtime to sweep away toxic practices and enhance employee engagement for all year round benefit.
